African Union
Employer Description
The African Union (AU) is a continental organization comprising 55 member states that make up the countries of the African continent. Established in 2002, the AU was created to promote unity, peace, and sustainable development among African nations, replacing the earlier Organization of African Unity (OAU).
The African Union’s presence in Nigeria plays a crucial role in fostering the AU’s mission on both national and regional levels. As one of the most influential and populous countries in Africa, Nigeria holds a key strategic position within the AU. The Nigeria branch supports AU initiatives and ensures the country’s active participation in shaping continental policies, security cooperation, economic development, and integration efforts.

- Promotes AU’s vision and Agenda 2063 — “The Africa We Want.”
Presence in Nigeria
The AU works closely with several Nigerian ministries, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and partners with ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), headquartered in Abuja. Nigeria also hosts or supports AU-affiliated institutions and is a strong voice in continental policy-making.
Nigeria’s Role in the AU
Nigeria is a founding member of the AU and contributes significantly in terms of funding, military support, and diplomatic leadership. Nigerian leaders, diplomats, and experts often serve in key AU roles, helping shape the future of Africa on a continental level.
